Medicinal Nature - Manda Spring

Health Benefits of Food- Beans

November 26th 2006 00:25
White Beans
Beans are rich in fiber, potassium, protien, and iron.
There are so many dry beans to choose from. Pinto bean, kidney bean, red bean, white bean, pink bean, brown beans etc. No matter what type is your favorite they are all being noted for their role in heart health. Beans lower bad cholesterol and optimize healthy heart function. The reason for the wonderful impact regarding the heart is because of the amount of soluble fiber. But it is not just the soluble fiber that helps out your body but also the insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber is responsible for maintaining and maximizing digestive health.

Although dry beans are great to use, the canned ones are just as good. The canned beans will always contain their medicinal properties including fiber, protein, potassium and iron.

Something new for me , I didn't know that beans lower cholesterol and optimize heart function.
My favorite are white beans , prepared with vegetable oil , garlic, leek, tomato and pickled paprika . We call it Gravce na tavce

Daressi, that sounds good. Now I need a recipe.

Manda, thanks for another informative post. I didn't know that chickpeas (or any beans) had fat in them.

Gravce na tavce by Daressi for Adele

Ingredients : white beans 300g ( one day before put it in the water ) , leek 500g ( sliced ) , 4 big spoons of oil, 3 tomatoes ( sliced) , 3 paprika ( sliced) , salt and pepper.

Preparation: Cook beans until become soft and then percolate. Roast ( fry) leek on oil . Take one pottery dish ( or fireproof dish) . At the bottom put roasted leek , spice with salt’n’pepper . Above put cooked beans , spice with salt’n’pepper. Over beans put tomatoes and paprika and off course spice with salt’n’pepper. At the end pour one glass of water and bake in oven at 175°C until all water evaporate . It should look like on picture above .

katyzzz,
Thanks! I usually make baked beans with pinto beans but I am not sure what canned baked beans commonly use. The properties can be found on the can's "nutritional info" section. The bean's nutritional elements do not change, unless specifically altered (which I am sure the company would have to label in order to avoid lawsuit), the only thing that would affect the quality of nutrition would be the added ingredients so that would be the first thing to check.

Daressi-
Thanks for that recipe! I will try it. I am glad you could benefit from the post.

Adele-
Yes, although it isn't much fat, there still is some. This would not really make much of an impact (negatively) on a diet--- the health benefits FAR out weigh the 'fat' issue.

Thank you all for reading!

Daressi, that sounds really good. I'll try it soon.

Manda, I'm not too worried about the fat in my diet. Food is good.

Adele,
I agree with you there.

Adrienne,
There are a few herbs that can help you to "take out the garbage" from your body. The following are herbs known for their detoxing properties.

Psyllium seed -The mucilage in the seeds expands eight to fourteen times the size of the original seeds. This can also create a feeling of fullness, decreasing one's desire to overeat. Be sure to drink lots of water when using psyllium.
Hibiscus flower- this is used as a diuretic which empties excess water stored in your body.
Licorice root - used in general detox.
Alfalfa - another great general detoxifyer
Oatstraw -excellent in general detox
Violet leaf - beside a great general detox plant it also is high in essential vitamins.
And finally my favorite of detox herbs- Milk Thistle Seed - helps detox your whole body (general detox) while pumping your body full of antioxidant support. Because this is an antioxident, it helps to detoxify almost all elements from the body : food, alcohol, drugs, chemicals, etc.

(If you are unsure if you have an allergy to a specific plant/herb check with a health professional first.)

Stanley,
Asians have been eating soy beans for centuries. There are many health problems that can arise from eating large quantities of soy products however. Such as: malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility-even cancer and heart disease.
Asians consume soy in very small quantities- but it is other races who tend to eat way too much of it.
There are millions of people who actually think that consuming soy products are going to help them in some way, some even give soy milk to their babies and children. Unfortunately, the truth of the matter is that it has been known to cause birth defects, infertility, among other serious problems (noted above).
There are a few health benefits of soy but ONLY in small doses...
So, yes, this is a valid comment.
an informative article on soy- click here

Thanks Everyone!

Hi Manda,

...thanks for the great information and Daressi's recipe... I am a leek freak and will try this one, perhaps with less S 'n' P *giggle* ...didn't know about chick pea's either - except they take the longest to soften when making homous. I bought canned ones for a while until I noticed the sodium and sugar content... as the female body gets older, you have to really watch your sodium and sugar issues, least you blow up like a blimp... back to boiling my own now... 3 hrs before the guests arrive! *lol*

...always interesting, Manda...

Well, there it goes, after reading your article I have decided to take protein via milk and other resources for a short while and see what happens.

Lean meat and fish is now my fav in the list. But I can't take fish all the time it cost more in the city.

sigh. what a life we are having. should start growing beans...
