Warning! Eating Wild Cashews
November 24th 2008 14:37
If you ever find yourself out and about and see a cashew tree it is important that you remember one important fact! The green hull that encloses the nut is toxic! It burns and blisters the lips kind of like poison ivy would do to the skin.
Carefully remove the nut and wash it and the roast it. It is said that heating the nut with the green hull will kill the poison so this is another way to make this nut safe to eat.

You only take the nut after the fruit is ripe and the nut turns brown.
The shell of the nut is very hard but can be split with a knife. Inside you will find the nut and cashew oil which is black and can stain the skin easily. Cashew oil is used as a base for paint.
The fruit although acidic is not dangerous. I can be used as a curry additive.
The nut itself can be sun dried for cooking in curries or roasted for nibbles.
I have not heard of any cases of people dying from eating cashew.
