The Facts of Sodium
June 2nd 2007 16:52
We have all heard about sodium. We have heard its good and it is bad. I hope to give you a little better understanding of sodium and what it really does and most importantly...the facts!
Sodium is necessary for the human body to function. We need it to survive! Why? Well let me give you a little run down as to why it is so crucial. Sodium is also known as sodium chloride or salt; chloride is the stuff that keeps water flow in and out of every cell in the body. Sodium regulates blood volume and blood pressure and the contracting of muscles and nerve impulses.
If too much sodium is in the body, we get dehydrated. Too much sodium is bad for reasons like dehydration and blood pressure fluctuation.
Athletes or people who do lots of sweating need to ingest a little more than others because as we know, when we sweat, we excrete salt as well as other wastes.
You can find sodium in many things we eat such as ketchup, crackers, sausage, salad dressing, cheese, canned soup, barbeque sauce, and soda.
Some people are actually deficient in their sodium intake some of the symptoms that may occur if you are deficient are dizziness, cramps, convulsions, and exhaustion. Be sure you check with your doctor before taking supplements or increasing salt intake.

Isn't it too little sodium in the body can cause dehydration?
Subject to clarifying that, this is very useful information, well expressed as usual.

I`m not a lover of salt I never use it in anything - seems our food is full of the stuff these days.
