December 11th 2006 16:24
There are many types of food poisoning and all can be extremely painful to experience. Hopefully, this will define these areas a little better and help you determine what type of food poisoning you may have and where you might have contracted it.
First it breaks down into three specific classifications which are bacterial, parasitic and viral.
*In this blog we will look at the bacterial toxins.
• Botulism: there are three types of this disease
1. Classic botulism-this is the most common of food poisoning.
2. Infant botulism - this specific strikes babies. For instance, if you give a small baby honey some spores from the honey can give the baby infant botulism.
3. Wound botulism - is rare and can be contracted by not keeping a wound clean.
Botulism comes form contaminated food and is toxic to your body-it attacks your nervous system.
• E-coli-you can get e-coli form eating under cooked meat and eating food which has been prepared with dirty hands.
• Listeria-is a serious infection and can severely cause damage to unborn and newborn babies. It is found in cow’ milk, feces, soil, and on leafy green vegetables. Usually it is linked to un pasteurized milk or cheese such as
1. Feta cheese
2. Brie
3. Camembert
4. Blue cheese
5. Mexican style cheese
*Listeria can also be spread through sexual contact so beware!
• Salmonella-this is another very common culprit in food poisoning. This bacterium attacks the intestinal tract and reproduces in your small intestine…this is what makes you sick. You contract this bacterium from eating food that contains these live organisms. It is also noteworthy to mention that household pets often carry this bacterium in their feces so be careful when handling food after holding your animal. Symptoms may include
1. Nausea
2. Diarrhea
3. Fever
4. Belly pain
5. Vomiting
• Staphylococcal Food Poisoning-This little bacterium is responsible for several different infections that your body may get, all of which are painful. What makes you sick is the toxin that is produced when this bacteria multiplies. It is usually found on foods and the hands on preparers that do not use safely cleaning practices. The foods that this bacteria usually live on are unfortunately the healthier choices in restaurants such as various salads, sandwiches, etc. With this cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are present.

My boss just suffered food poisoning last Friday. He was so weak that all of us (staffs) stayed back to ensure he is in good hands until his wife comes to get him to see the doctor. He purged so much until he couldn't move much. We all took turns to get him isotonic drink to replenish lost fluid.
I must be aware of cheese... Or the next thing is to keep my body filled with good bacteria before the next possible attack.
Cheerio
