The Scours: Deadly to Baby Sheep
May 20th 2008 04:13
I am a health writer and today I am going to share with you a health tip that I have discovered for baby sheep. I have a large ranch and I tend to sheep. Occasionally a baby sheep will be rejected by its mother and/or the herd. In this case you’d need to bottle feed. Always purchase formula that has colostrums in it, this will safe guard them as the milk will be more like their mother’s.
The scours are a period of time in baby sheep where something has invaded their bodies such as bacterium or a protozoan. They will lose their appetite, get watery yellow diarrhea, and eventually lose all strength and lay down to die. First you need to find out if it is a bacterium or protozoan. Grind up fresh cilantro in a blender with a little of the formula and instead of water use Pedialyte from the store. When the small amount of formula has a green tint strain the excess cilantro out and dump it and put the liquid mixture in the bottle… then feed the bottle to the baby sheep.
The cilantro is an anti bacterial and will stop diarrhea and kill the bacterium- but, if it doesn’t help then you probably have a protozoan by the name of cryptosporidium lurking within the sheep. In this case, substitute water with Pedialyte so they don’t dehydrate, administer (through a baby medicine dropper) Pepto Bismol 3-4 times daily and make sure they drink the bottle and take all the medicine … within a week they should be feeling much better.
